Pessary Fitting & Support
Supportive pessary fittings to help relieve prolapse symptoms and urinary incontinence. We’ll give you clear, professional guidance and ongoing support.
-
A pessary is a medical grade silicone device fitted within the vagina to provide support and help relieve prolapse related symptoms such as heaviness, pressure or bladder leakage.
Pessaries can make exercise, coughing and everyday movement feel more comfortable. They come in different shapes and sizes, and your physio will help find the best fit for your body and lifestyle.
-
A pessary offers a non-surgical option to reduce prolapse symptoms and improve day-to-day comfort. Many women find it helps ease feelings of heaviness or pressure, improve bladder and bowel function, reduce prolapse related bulging symptoms and make exercise or daily activities feel more comfortable again.
-
Ensuring a correct fit and routine pessary care reduce the risks associated with pessaries, however complications can still occur. The most common is mild increased vaginal discharge (given the vagina is self-cleaning). Other complications include constipation, vaginal wall rubbing or erosion, vaginal bleeding, bacterial vaginosis or worsening urinary incontinence (usually when a severe prolapse has been corrected by a pessary).
-
Depending on the type of pessary fitted, a routine cleaning regime is recommended and can vary from daily to 6 monthly. If you are able and willing to learn how to perform your own cleans, your physio will teach you how. If you are unable to perform your own clean, we can arrange for a 3 -6 monthly schedule depending on the type of pessary you have and your individual needs. For all pessaries, a 6-12 monthly review is recommended to ensure your pessary is still fitting correctly and not causing any issues.
The pessaries used by Empower Physio For Women are most commonly the Profem brand, which are recommended by the manufacturer to be replaced every 12 months.

FAQs for Patients & Referrers:
-
No, but if you have one it is always welcomed.
-
If your chosen health fund cover has the appropriate extras, then yes. You have the option to pay upfront and then claim directly through your health fund (many of the major health funds have a user friendly app that performs this function) or at the time of payment through a program called Tyro in which you will be asked to pay the gap fee upfront.
-
EPFW is fully equipped to offer telehealth appointments. If you are unable to physically attend an apppointment, please ask Erin about this option for you.
-
Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to reschedule your appointment. You can notify by text message, email or phone call.
If you provide less than 24 hours notice, a cancellation fee of $30.00 may be charged. If you do not arrive for your appointment and fail to provide notice, a fee equal to 50% of the consultation price will be charged.
If you are running late, please give as much notice as possible. We will attempt to accommodate you, however, if there is a patient booked immediately after you, your appointment may understandably be cut short.
-
Yes.
Please note: you will be charged the full cost of the session and refunded the value of the benefit from Medicare (as current for May 2026 this is equal to $61.80)
-
If you are presenting for a pelvic floor issue (such as POP, incontinence, pelvic pain, etc) in many cases, an internal examination is the best way to be able to accurately assess and deterrmine the best management plan to help you. You will always be fully educated on what is involved and what to expect and the examination will only go ahead with your informed consent.
-
Generally speaking, one in four women will likely have their period at any one time. Having your period does not affect assessment or treatment, which means you can still have your assessment at that time of the month. If you have an extremely painful or heavy period and are uncomfortable, then the assessment can be delayed to another time. You can still attend your appointment and complete other types of assessment or education.
-
Whilst GP Chronic Condition Management Plans are welcomed and accepted, Empower Physio For Women is not a bulk-billing practice. Patients will be charged a gap. In select cases and with appropriate justification from the referring GP, an alternate arrangement may be considered.
